The
Lord is worshipped in different ways. Some meditate on him,
others sing devotional songs and, many express their love
through offerings to their favorite deities, which is also
called puja. Puja can be done in temples or at home. The offerings
are done following the methods specified in the Smritis, AgamaGranthas,
Puranas and Ithihasas (epics)These religious scriptures have
also laid down the items, which please a deity. |
Benefits of a Puja
According to our sacred texts, Puja -
- Disciplines the mind
- Energizes the deity and the worshipper
- Enables one to experience oneness with
divinity as we unconsciously offer the self through our material
offerings.
Puja establishes a bridge between the
worshipper (the lover) and the deity (the loved). It facilitates
flow of love-energy in both ways. This energy not only sanctifies
the self but also re-vitalizes the body's resources, making one
experience, what is called HOLY BLISS. Thus both the worshipped
and the worshipper benefit from Puja.
Forms of offerings
We can perform a Puja through:
Physical offering:Here the offerings are done in actuality.
Mental offering: This is done through visualizations where
one mentally offers something to the image of the deity or visualizes
bathing the deity in Ganga water. The latter is more effective
as it involves concentration, and the mind is focussed inward..
