Man
is but an instrument, powerless and utterly at the mercy of
God. When he is conscious of his frailties and impulses he
seeks refuge in the Divine. Though the divine transcends all
transient limitations, man the human, seeks to idolize the
formless Divine. This is where a symbol or an image or a place
of worship comes to his rescue. All religions have their sacred
places of worship called Temples. The temple is a link between
man and God, between the earthly and the divine. |
Pilgrimage to temples has an important place
in the Hindu Religion. A place of pilgrimage is called a thirtha
and is invariably associated with a temple. Pilgrimage is
a means of crossing the ocean of Samsara and helps propagate
our religion among the people. Religious discourses, community
bhajans, harikathas are organized in temples. The temple has
occupied the most central place in the Hindu society for centuries
and has been the greatest single factor in keeping it together.
Hindus should feel obliged to attend all the important functions
of a temple in their vicinity and should perform one important
ritual for their family deity in the temple. |
