a fantastic means to overcome the problems that modern man
has to deal with. To enhance the auto immune system, to increase
and keep at optimum level the vital energy of the body systems
is the prime goal. This result is greater mental efficiency
and creates an attitude of well-being. If the body systems
are functioning properly then as a result the mental and emotional
reactions to situations are well within control. |
A properly planned yogic programme
initially for 15-20 minutes daily followed by more time spent
on sadhana (meditation) is ideal.
- Yoga is a timeless pragmatic science evolved over thousands
of years dealing with the physical, moral, mental and spiritual
well being of man as a whole.·
- The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit meaning to bind,
join, attach and yoke, to direct and concentrate one's attention.
- The system of Yoga is so called because it teaches the means
by which the individual soul (Jivatma) can be united to or be
in communion with the Cosmos (Paramatma) and so secure liberation
(Moksha).
- When the restlessness of the mind, intellect and self is
stilled through the practice of Yoga, the yogi by the grace
of the spirit within himself finds fulfillment. Yoga has also
been described as wisdom in work or skillful living amongst
activities with harmony and moderation.
- The study of yoga is different from working for a diploma
or university degree. One cannot expect favourable results in
a stipulated time. The obstacles, the trials and tribulations
in the path of yoga have to be confronted and can be removed
only with the help of a Guru.
- The relationship between the Guru and shishya is special
and transcends that between a parent and child, husband and
wife or friends.
- A Guru has to be free from egotism while a shishya must possess
the necessary qualities for higher realization and development.
He must have confidence, devotion and love for his Guru.
Maharishi Patanjali's Yoga Sutra or Yoga Aphorisms
have enumerated eight steps or eight limbs for the practice of yoga.
The practice of these spiritual descriptions opens up one's spirituality.
The eight limbs of the yoga are:
1. Yama - The various forms of abstention
from evil doings
2. Niyama - Various observances
3. Asana - Assumption of right posture
4. Pranayama - Control of prana
5. Pratyahara - Withdrawal of the mind
from sense objects
6. Dharana - Concentration
7. Dhyana - Meditation
8. Samadhi - Absorption in the supreme
