If you are experiencing low back pain, you are not alone. More than 65 million people suffer from low back pain every year. Back aches are the most common reason for doctor visits, after cold and flu symptoms. Fifty percent of all patients who suffer from an episode of low back pain will have another occurrence within one year. In the majority of cases back pain is caused by the irritation of a nerve root near the spine, not by problems with the muscles, ligament or bone. A nerve that travels from the spinal cord through the openings between the bones of the spine gets pinched or irritated, the surrounding muscles tense up and the patient experiences low back pain.

The causes of more than 80 percent of back pain cases are unknown. Some people have damaged or bulging discs but feel fine. Researchers do know that back pain often begins with an injury, after lifting a heavy object or moving suddenly. People who do not exercise regularly face an increased risk for back pain, as do obese people. Sciatica can be caused by blood clots, tumors and abscesses. Arthritic back pain can be the result of infections such as Lyme disease and viral arthritis.

Holistic Perspective
Due to the improper sitting or standing posture, lifting heavy objects and by doing more strenuous works the vãta in the body gets vitiated and gets lodged in the lower back leading to diseases of the lower back.

The causative emotions associated with this disease are many including a low level of tolerance, feeling totally unsupported by life, low self esteem, a sense of pressure from all sides, and inability to bounce back.

Suggested home remedies
Apply a paste made of ginger powder mixed with sufficient water to the affected area. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes, wash it off, and then rub the back with some eucalyptus oil.
Put 1/3 cup ginger powder and 1/3 cup baking soda into the hot water in your tub. Soak in the tub for 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat this bath 2 or 3 times a week. This provides extra healing and muscle relaxation.

Meditation
Sit on the chair comfortably with your spine straight. Be aware of the affected zone in the lower back. Be aware of the presence of muscles and connective tissues and bones in the affected area. Visualise white light entering from the navel and spreading to the affected area and be aware of the alignment taking place due to the power of this white light. Be aware of the subtle physical movement taking place in the lower back. Focus all your mental energy to your lower back to restore its condition.
