Significance of Rishi Panchami
According to Hindu tradition, women who are expecting babies or in their menstrual period are not allowed to engage in religious activities or domestic duties. They are also refrained from doing activities in the kitchen. They are even forbidden from touching religious items. If this criterion is broken by mistake or for other reasons, it causes Dosha in the ladies who violated it. And to remove such doshas, women observe Rishi Panchami Vrat.
While observing fast, devotees express their respect, gratitude, and remembrance of the great deeds of those ancient sages, who dedicated their lives for the welfare of society. Rishi Panchami Vrat is the destroyer of sins and gives favourable outcomes if it is done by a proper set of traditional rituals. The Rishi Panchami celebration serves as a foundation for fasting and is a symbol of devotion, commitment, and respect for the sages.
Rishi Panchami Vrat Katha
Once upon a time, in a kingdom, a Brahmin lived with his wife, son, and daughter. The Brahmin’s daughter got married to a good and reputed Brahmin family. But as time passed, the girl’s husband died prematurely, and she became a widow, and hence, returned to her father’s house. After a few days, the whole body of the girl got infected with worms. After seeing her infected body, they were grieved and took their daughter to Sage Uttak to know what exactly happened to their daughter.
The sage told the Brahmin and his family about the previous birth of the girl. He further added that during menstruating, she had touched the utensils or other places of the house, which is why she fell prey to all these pains. Due to this unintentional sin, her whole body was covered with worms.
According to ancient scriptures, women who are in the menstruation period cannot be a part of religious rituals or activities. The girl didn’t realize the ancient facts, and she faced the punishment somehow. At last, the sage advised the girl to keep Rishi Panchami Vrat and ask for forgiveness with all her heart and reverence. By doing so, she would be freed from her sins. Observing Rishi Panchami, after some time, Brahmin’s daughter was freed from all her past sins.
