According to ancient scriptures, that story revolves around Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. Maa Parvati took birth 107 times on the earth to marry Lord Shiva but, she failed to do so. Therefore, she took birth for the 108th time in the house of the mountain king Himalaya and did severe penance to please Lord Shiva. During this severe penance, she spent days and gave up food and water but only survived chewing dry leaves. She did penance continuously, regardless of the weather. She worshipped him deep inside a cave in the forest, regardless of anyone. On the third Shukla of Bhadrapada, She made a Shivling out of the sand, and she pleased Lord Shiva.

After this, she told her father that ‘Father, I have spent a very large part of my life in the penance of Lord Shiva and now he had accepted her after being pleased with my penance. She had only one wish, to marry Lord Shiva. After some time, both got married with complete law and order. Then the Lord says, O Parvati! As a result of the fast that you had done by worshipping me on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, we both got married. The importance of Hariyali Teej Vrat is that it gives desired results to every woman who observes this fast with full devotion.
