Importance of Yagna and its Types

Meaning of Yagna

First things first, What is Yagya? Or what is Yajna? Yagya is a sacred fire-based offering used to pray and appease various deities. Since fire is one of the major elements that impact our inner being as well as body, Yagya serves as a medium between humans and God.

It is carried out in a brick-built Havan Kund or fire pit. Colorful flowers, leaves, beans, and grains are commonly used to decorate this fireplace. A special mixture of medicinal herbs, roots, dry fruits, wood, and ghee is used in performing Havan and is provided as an oblation into the Havan Kund fire. Also, Havan is followed by Sanskrit Mantras, which are a strong medium in their own religious way.

Havan is one of the ten niyams/rules or positive virtues that are prescribed for a devotee who wishes to achieve oneness with the divine. Havan is another way to conduct the Deva Yagnya, which is a Hindu ritual of worshipping the gods. I.e. one of man’s five regular responsibilities, according to the Santana Dharma’s tenets. In general, a Havan is conducted with the intention of achieving both spiritual and material success.

Importance of Yagna

The importance of Havana is stated in approximately 114 Mantras in the Saam Veda. According to the Yajur Veda, Havana is the most effective, appropriate, and beneficial deed. According to the Vedas, the only ways to achieve Moksha (salvation) or Self-realization are by Yajna or Yagnya and the Gayatri Mantra. There are several mantras linked to Yajna in each of the four Vedas. The root “Yaj” is the source of the word “Yajna.” According to the Yajur Veda mantra “Yajudevapujasangatikaranadaaneyshu,” the word “Yaj” has three meanings.

A trained priest with a thorough understanding of the Vedas should conduct the Yagya/Havan. After appeasing all of the concerned Gods with prayers and flowers, a fire is lit in a Havan pot/Kund. The Priest then continues to recite the verses or mantras, accompanied by receiving blessings from God and the Priest.

The life of Hinduism is synonymous with highly valuable rituals and vidhis. Any big Puja is incomplete without Havan. A Havan can achieve a level of sacredness and purity that no other ritual can. A sacred Hindu ritual in which offerings are made to the fire is known as a Homa or Havan.

Fire is one of the big five elements of nature and is considered the key element of a Havan or Homa. During a Havan, the offerings made to the holy fire are said to purify the air as well as the people present. It is also said to remove all negative energies from the place. Havan has many advantages, ranging from our bodies, minds, and souls to the world.
The following are some of Havan’s advantages: –

It has a cleaning effect:
Not only do we purify the air, but we also purify our minds and bodies.

All troubling thoughts will be extinguished in the fire by gazing at the Havan fire and chanting the holy mantras, resulting in positivity all around.

It serves Healing Environement:
During Havana, various gases decompose the poisonous gases, releasing free oxygen and other useful items that serve as disinfectants. Experiments on Havana were conducted by a French scientist called Trelle. He discovered that the mango tree is primarily used in Havan.
When wood is burned, a gas called “formic aldehyde” is released, which kills harmful bacteria and purifies the air. The scientists then created “formalin” from “formic aldehyde” gas. He also conducted research on jaggery Gur and discovered that when the jaggery is burned, it produces “formic aldehyde” gas. Tautilk, a scientist, discovered that if we remain in a Havan and its smoke for half an hour, the typhoid germs are killed. According to the Yajurveda, there are four types of items that are commonly used to prepare offerings for a Havan.

1. Sweets such as honey, jaggery, and raw sugar

When should a Havan be done?

Havan should preferably be done on a regular basis. Havan should be performed at least once a week in every household, in the presence of all family members. Since the air is filled with energy or prana in the early hours of the morning, it is considered to be the best time for all religious activities. This practice can, however, be performed at a time that is convenient for everybody.

No Havan is considered complete unless a donation/Daan has been made. Acts of charity and benevolence, liberality, and financial and non-financial donations are all examples of Daan.

Final Thoughts

The world’s greatest threat today is the world’s toxic climate. It is endangering not just the human race but all living things on the planet. In recent years, the western world has become deeply worried about our climate, which has become increasingly contaminated over time. Since the early Vedic Era, our Rishis and Maharishis have advised us on the purification process involved in a Havan.
As a result, if more people practise Havan twice a day, it is possible that the environment will be purified more effectively. We, on the other hand, have been ignoring it. If we promise to obey the laws of Sanatana Dharma and behave in accordance with them, we are certain that the world will be a much better place to live. So even if you’ll ask, what yagna and yagas were important during the Vedic period? The answer will be yes! But nowadays, it is ultra-important even more, due to t endless reasons.
