Some Popular Notions

The 27 nakshatras are Ashvini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashirsha, Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Sravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. Every nakshatra has a degree range, ruling planet, deity, symbol, element, gana, quality, colour, direction, tree, bird and animal.

Swati, Anuradha, Magha and Mrigasira are considered as Maha Nakshatras because they are blessed with immunity against some evils in comparison to other nakshatras.

The importance of a particular nakshatra is totally a relative thing. The energies of all nakshatra are important and needed because everything in your chart is there to awaken you. Still, based on a general notion, one of the most important nakshatras is ‘Pushya Nakshatra’ because it is a natural nurturer or caretaker. It completely lies in the sign of Cancer, and Saturn is the ruling planet. Saturn is the planet of karma or work. So anyone who belongs to this nakshatra will have work to nurture the world.

When we see good or bad in any nakshatra, the perception is very limited. Life as a whole is of a very inclusive nature and has all the flavours. Hence, the attributes of any person may seem to be troublesome but might be playing as a karma card unto others.

Krittika, Swati and Sravana are a few Nakshatras that are considered to be very intelligent. In terms of EQ (Emotional Quotient), Pushya and Punarvasu are extremely intelligent nakshatras.

Auspicious Nakshatra and Panchang

The Abhijeet Nakshatra, the 28th one, is the most Auspicious nakshatra, and it is considered as ‘‘Muhurata’ instead of the nakshatra. Apart from this, there are many auspicious times during the day or year. This is found out based on ‘Panchang’.

Panchang is a book where all the celestial events are recorded. It is referred by Vedic astrologers to calculate natal charts manually, and determine ascendants and degrees of planets. It is extremely important in ‘Muhurta’ astrology to ascertain the auspiciousness of a particular day and time. Panchanga in Vedic Astrology literally means 5 elements of a day. These 5 elements are Tithi, Vara, Karana, Nakshatra and Yoga.

Tithi determines how a person will feel about their activity. It is the lunar day calculated by the longitude of the moon minus the longitude of the sun divided by 12. There are 30 tithis categorised as Shukla and Krushna Paksha. There are 5 types of Tithis – Nanda, Bhadra, Jaya, Rikta and Purna.

Karana literally means doing an action. These are half-thithis. There are 11 Karanas – 7 moveable and 4 fixed.

Vara brings creativity to an activity. Vara means a day. Every Vara is ruled by a lord. Sunday is ruled by Sun, Monday by Moon, Tuesday by Mars and so on.

Nakshatra is the approach and purpose of an action. It is one of the key elements of Panchang.

Yoga holds an activity together. It means union. There are 27 Yogas—the union of Sun degrees, moon degrees and 93.25 degrees.

Tithi gives wealth; the Vara increases longevity, Nakshatra removes sin, Yoga cures diseases, and Karana gives success in deeds.

The most auspicious days are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Sunday is medium in auspiciousness. Tuesday and Saturday are not considered very conducive to starting something new and important.
