The Significance Of The Hindu Month Of Shravan

Shravan is the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar, which is associated with Hindu deities. We are all aware of the fact that religiously the month of Shravan is very auspicious. It is dedicated to the Neekanth Lord Shiva and his consort Mata Parvati. This month also marks the starting of Chaturmas. Devotees celebrate the month by observing a fast every Monday, or some of them also observe fast for an entire month. Shravan month is also known as Avani or Sawan month. Do not indulge in luxurious essentials of life

One should avoid being too immersed in the activities of pleasure and luxury. This is because this month marks the month of slumber for the great Lord Vishnu. Hence Lord Shiva is alert and dedicated to his responsibilities. The great Neelkantha being a Yogi, it becomes necessary to observe the ideas and principles that he is symbolic of in this month of Shravan. At the same time, all the devotees of Shiva and Goddess Parvati are expected to consume only Saavik vegetarian food. A lot of beliefs and principles have altered over a period of time. The animals and birds still hold prominence in the Hindu Shastra. The intention is not to get trapped in any negative karmic cycle. The karmic cycle is believed to be accelerated only through the thought and application of desires and beliefs.

Refrain from consuming non-veg or spicy foods

It is advisable to avoid non-vegetarian food and consumption of alcohol in the holy month of Shravan. Also, as per Vedic scriptures, overindulgence in uncontrollable pleasures gives birth to Rajas Guna within our body. Rajas Guna plays havoc with the overall process of evolution of a being.

Scientifically, it is proved that alcohol and non-vegetarian food can hamper your health beyond repair. Especially during the rainy season, the consumption of chicken or mutton can bear many water-borne diseases in the human body.

If you consume such food items, they bring the qualities of Rajas and Tamas. So, you may become mentally unfit and take charge of your duties like meditation and worshipping the Lord. Hence the Rajasik and Tamshik food habits are prohibited in our scriptures. If the proportion of Rajasik and Tamsik food is more in your body, then it will be difficult for you to stay focused on your duties. They may have a negative impact on your mind. So best to not consume the tamsik and rajasik quality of food such as spicy and oily food. If we do not control such things, it can have an adverse impact on our body and overall well-being. If you cannot control it, then you might suffer from stomach related ailments and digestive problems.

Consume Veg Food Items By cutting into Pieces

As per the Hindus beliefs, consuming food in large quantity in the month of Shravan can bring stomach-related issues. During the monsoon month, the power of the digestive system is comparatively weaker. Hence it gets difficult for the body to digest and process such a heavy portion of food.

On the other hand, a large portion of food can spell havoc on our body. Eat meals that are light and can be easily digested by our body. It is good to consume fresh and hygienic food, fresh fruits, sprouts and other such stuff. Science has proven that consuming four to five light meals in the day at a certain interval is better than consuming two or three large portions of meals.

Do not indulge in unecessary conflicts

During the month of Shravan, do not harm, hurt or fight with anybody. As per the religious scriptures, Lord Shiva had consumed poison to protect humanity at the time of Samudra Manthan. While he was consuming the poison Goddess Parvati touched his throat gently to deactivate the ill effects of poison entering his body. Such noble deeds remind us of the qualities of kindness, selflessness, humility, nobility and virtue. Hence during the month of Shravan, it will be beneficial for us to align our thoughts and actions in this direction for health and well being.

Not only in the month of Shravan but otherwise also in our lives, we should not be cheating, hurting anybody or harming the animals. We should always practice caution in our actions and words. Negative actions accumulate to become the curse of bad karma, and the continuous cycle of negativity will be challenging to break. Even if we have hurt anyone unknowingly, we should seek forgiveness and move on with our lives.

Do not harm snakes or any other reptiless

The Hindu mythology suggests that the serpent or snake on the neck of Lord Shiva is symbolic of an endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth. It is believed that the snake is symbolic of one’s ego, and if we are capable of overcoming it, we could adorn it as our ornament. When Lord Shiva used to reside in the Kailasa, snakes performed the role of his accessories such as armlets and necklaces. Therefore, one should not kill snakes not only in the month of Shravan but otherwise also. Snakes are considered to be very sacred, as per Hindu mythology. Also, the serpents or snakes are represented by the planets of Ketu and Rahu. Multiple astrological theories suggest that if we harm any serpents, we may face the wrath of these planets.

Do Practice Yoga In the Shravan

Lord Shiva was believed to be an Adi Guru or the Adi Yogi as he was the one who practised Yoga more than fifteen thousand years ago. Lord Shiva was believed to attain full enlightenment and was famous as an intense and ecstatic dancer in the Himalayas mountain range. As per the legends, Lord Shiva got transformed into an Almighty God only through the power of Yoga and Yoga practices.

Yoga teaches us the way to our life in great shape. It is a chronic ailment of digestive disorders which causes much pain in the stomach. It portrays a link between the stomach and the nervous system. Yoga has the power to cure such and many other ailments.

  • Perfrom Ananda Balasana
  • Do Half Sited Spinal Twist called, Ardha Matsyendrasana

  • Attempt supported bridge Pose or Salamba Setu Bandhasana
