This is a special day in Sanatana Dharma, dedicated to remembering and recognizing the power of Dharma over Adharma (bad). Kansa Vadh, which is celebrated on the Dashami Tithi of Kartik Shukla Paksha every year, remembers the day when Lord Shri Krishna defeated the powerful and evil King Kansa of Mathura and saved all those dear to him.

Significance of Kansa Vadh: Victory of Dharma over Adharma
Kansa Vadh is a very important part of Shri Krishna’s divine play (Krishna Leela):
- Kansa had kept his own sister Devaki, her husband Vasudeva, and his father, King Ugrasen, as hostages. Lord Krishna’s victory over him ended their pain and saved the helpless hostages from years of torture.
- When Lord Krishna defeated Kansa, he did not inherit the throne for himself. Rather, he reinstated his grandfather as the king again.
- Devaki’s eighth child was destined to kill Kansa as predicted by a heavenly voice (Akashvani). Lord Vishnu, in his eighth incarnation, killed Kansa in spite of all his inhuman efforts to kill every child born to Devaki.
How Kansa Vadh is Celebrated in Mathura & Braj
Although millions of Lord Krishna’s followers across India celebrate this day, there are no celebrations like those in Mathura and Braj:
- People from the ancient Chaturvedi community, the priestly, scholarly community who have studied the four Vedas, congregate in Mathura from around the world in order to enjoy a ten-day festival after the celebration of Diwali.
- A huge effigy of King Kansa is then built by his followers, which is burned and destroyed in front of the public, thus proclaiming that evil eventually succumbs and truth wins.
- The local artistes enact dramatic Leelas of Shri Krishna and Lord Balarama entering Mathura, defeating the wrestlers of Kansa and finally slaying the evil king.
- On the streets, the sacred chants of Hare Rama Hare Krishna and bhajans of bhakti are heard.
Teen Van Parikrama: The Tradition Following Kansa Vadh
The day following Kansa Vadh coincides with Dev Uthani Ekadashi (Prabodhini Ekadashi).
On this sacred day, thousands of devotees undertake the Teen Van Parikrama across three holy towns of the Braj region:
- Mathura
- Vrindavan
- Garun Govind
Ancient tradition says Lord Krishna himself took a round of these holy forests after he defeated Kansa. This ritual is still performed by devotees in order to seek the blessings of the deity and for spiritual cleansing.
Simple Rituals & Puja Vidhi at Home
To welcome positive energy and strength in your life, try these easy home rituals:
- Radha – Krishna Worship: Clean up your home temple, then light a lamp of ghee (diya) and offer fresh yellow flowers, Tulsi leaves, and butter or sweets to Lord Krishna and Radha Rani.
- Chant Shri Krishna Mantras: For peace of mind and calmness, just repeat the Hare Krishna Mahamantra or Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 108 times.
- Charity & good deeds: Donate dairy, clothing, and other eatables to the poor, as good karma on Kartik Shukla Dashami day results in mighty positive energies.
Astrological Significance & Remedies for Kartik Dashami
Kartik month is ruled by Lord Vishnu, making it an exceptionally potent period for astrological remediation:
Overcoming Enemies & legal issues: Worshiping Lord Krishna on Kartik Dashami will eliminate enemies, concealed competition, and planets that affect the planets Rahu and Mars.
Parental & Family Harmony: Conducting a Santan Gopal Puja or Krishna Puja on this day enhances unity among the family members and removes delays in progeny or family blessings.
