Gana Nakshatra
Nakshatras play a very crucial role in understanding how the personality of a native will be. This has more to do with the conceptual and analytical way to understand an individual. Gana Nakshatra contributes to Guna Milan (matchmaking) as well, which is the analysis of compatibility between two people by looking at their astrological charts.
In Vedic astrology, there are 27 Nakshatras, and each Nakshatras are divided into three categories. Also, each category has been assigned with Ganas. However, Ganas not only shows the compatibility between spouses, but it is for all relationships, be it family members, relatives, and friends. But it is majorly used for marriage compatibility analysis.
There are three Ganas – Devata, Manushya, and Rakshasa. Generally, Ganas are relevant to understand the traits of a human being based on how the Moon is posited. But the apt analysis is done when it is looked at in congruence with the Sun and other planetary influences. Before understanding the key traits of all three Ganas, it’s important to have clarity on the fundamentals of these nomenclatures.
First, Devata Gana and Rakshasa Gana doesn’t mean that one is divine and the other is a demon. This is a widespread misconception. However, the differentiation was done based on tendencies an individual can have based on the Gana; not necessarily the individual will be exercising that. The differentiation of Devata and Rakshasa origin people was based on certain lifestyles, food, rituals, and deities.
Both the Ganas are quite powerful. Devata Gana origin natives performed more of daytime rituals such as religious ceremonies, had particular deity, and ate sattvic food to suit the purpose of their life.
Whereas, Rakshasa Gana origin natives were more into night rituals because they were the knower and practitioners of occult and mysticism. They had specific food requirements based on their lifestyles and mostly had fierce gods and goddesses. Both the Ganas could choose as per their conscience which lifestyle they wanted despite their birth chart.
Now there are many tendencies due to our genetics, but every human being can choose consciously. For example – in this era of fast food junk and busy lifestyle, most of the people, despite being of different Ganas, become tamasic, eat negative pranic food, and are lethargic. However, they have consciously or unconsciously chosen it.

Below are the basic characteristics of Ganas. Every human being has influences of majorly two to three Nakshatras in their chart. All these Nakshatras can have different Ganas; hence an individual can have mixed qualities.
Devata
This Gana has a divine origin. Their quality is sattvic. The natives of this Gana can be very sensitive towards other beings – be it human or animals and birds. They are said to have a gentle approach towards life and in daily interactions. They have very less appetite, so either they eat less or only up to the optimum requirement.
These natives have learned their lessons and acquire wisdom and intelligence, which they usually use for charitable work. They have a tendency to serve all beings and make this world a better place to live in. They are known for their kindness and generosity.
They are karma oriented or people of action. Because of the kind of lifestyle they live, including good food habits, they are quite active. They have a quality of being all-inclusive which means they have acceptance for differences and uniqueness in all beings.
Hence, they are extremely broad-minded and easy to be with. They are spiritual individuals and can be traditionalists too. They avoid being jealous and getting engaged in any fights.
The key themes are – evolved, disciplined, methodical, compassionate, helpful, supportive, responsible, calm, observant, harmonious, accepting, friendly, adaptable, loyal, humanitarian, perfectionists, spiritual, and traditionalists.

They are more into trade and business. However, they are peace lovers, but they can be vindictive at times. They can be manipulative, diplomatic, and have the cleverness to get their things done.
Sometimes, they come across as dominating individuals, and they are well supported by their communities. Also, they have less acceptability for anything different than usual social practice.

Normality depends on the numbers of communities who know it and are practising. The natives of this Gana can sense negative events before occurrence. They have deja vu experiences often.
However, this Gana is said to have Tamasic quality. They can be stubborn and rigid in their views. They have a strong sixth sense, and their intuitive nature makes them futuristic individuals. Guna Milan
Guna Milan is a matchmaking system in astrology where up to 36 points or traits could be matched for compatibility calculations of bride and groom. The word ‘Guna’ means quality, and ‘Milan’ means matching.
Out of the 36 points, 21 points come from the Nakshatra based system, and 15 points come from the Rashi / Zodiac based system. Out of the 21 points of the Nakshatra based system, 6 points are contributed by ‘Gana Milan’. Gana Milan is a system of matching the qualities of bride and groom based on the Gana they belong to. The basis of Gana Milan is the natal Moon chart.
Below is an illustration how Gana points are calculated:
Bride | Groom | Groom | Groom |
---|---|---|---|
Deva | Manushya | Rakshasa | |
Deva | 6 | 6 | 0 |
Manushya | 5 | 6 | 0 |
Rakshasa | 1 | 0 | 6 |
Here is an explanation of the table above:
If the bride belongs to Deva Gana and the groom also belongs to Deva Gana, then they get 6 points as compatibility. Whereas if the bride belongs to Deva Gana and the groom belongs to Manushya Gana, they also get 6 points. But if the bride belongs to Deva Gana and the groom belongs to Rakshasa Gana, they get 0 points.
If the bride belongs to Manushya Gana, and the groom belongs to Deva Gana, they get 5 points as compatibility. On the other hand, if the bride belongs to Manushya Gana and the groom also belongs to Manushya Gana, they get 6 points. And so on…
It is argued by various astrologers and researchers that Gana calculation should be done based on the Sun and other planetary influences as well to come up with accurate findings for compatibility.
On a high key, Astrology is an intensive science, and the importance of Gana exists widely because of the role it plays in matchmaking.
