Chinese Astrology : History and Zodiac Animals

Chinese astrology has been elaborated almost 5000 years ago during the Zhou dynasty (1046–256 BC) and flourished during the Han dynasty (2nd century BC to 2nd century AD). It is closely related to Chinese philosophy. It is associated with the theory of three harmonies of heaven, earth, and water.

This astrology is based on a 12-year mathematical cycle, in which each year is represented by an animal symbol. These 12 Chinese zodiac animal symbols are the very foundation of Chinese Astrology. These zodiac animal symbols include:

Most of the time, Goat may also be termed as Sheep, whereas the Pig may also be termed as Boar.

The symbol of these animals is assigned specific years, and hence it’s one’s year of birth that essentially decides one’s Chinese Sign. However, apart from the years, other chronological elements, including months, days, and hours are also assigned to these 12 animal symbols.

Apart from the aspect mentioned above, the central part of this Chinese astrology includes the balance theory of Yin-Yang, Wu Sing teachings, and five elements – metal, wood, fire, earth, and air. According to the principles of Chinese astrology, all of these aspects can define a person’s past, present, and future. They can be used to develop robust and accurate predictions of a person’s characteristics and the end.

Let’s proceed to know the details of Chinese Astrology.

History of Chinese Astrology

According to the Chinese Ancestral, it is believed that Chinese Astrology had been passed down from the Sumerian and Babylonian cultures to the Chinese almost 5,000 years ago. Initially, this Astrology was solely used for the emperor or the King of the particular Kingdom, responsible for peace and harmony in the kingdom. To rule the kingdom well and with authority, the emperor needed accurate information from his astrologers.

Today, Chinese astrology is used by everyone to predict the past, present, and future of a person and a person’s characteristics.

This Chinese astrology was initially known as “Five House” or “Five Planet” astrology. It was based on the five major planets in our Solar system; Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars. Later the Sun and Moon were added to make seven “stars” and provided the foundation for what is known as the Twenty Eight Lunar Mansions.

This method produced a remarkably accurate horoscope for society as a whole. Still, it was unsuitable for individuals, so two new Chinese astrology systems were developed: one based on the Solar calendar called Ba Zi or the Four Pillars Of Destiny. The other on the Lunar calendar called Zi Wei Dou Shu.
