The worshiper should wake up early on this day in the Brahma Muhurta (Between 3.30 am to 5.30 am) and take a bath after completing the daily morning routines. Then, one should start the ritual of worshipping the gooseberry (Amla) tree. Milk should be offered to the gooseberry tree while worshipping.

After that, the Amla tree should be worshipped with Roli, Akshat, fruits, and flowers, etc. After this one should circumnavigate the gooseberry tree and light a lamp (Diya) near the roots of the Amla tree. Then, one should listen or read the story of Akshaya Navami sitting below a tree. When the story reading/listening is over, prasad should be offered to the Amla tree and then should be distributed amongst devotees.

Story of Akshaya Navami

A childless person lived in Kashi, the city of Lord Vishwanath. He had pleaded a lot to God to bless him with a child, but all his pleads went in vain. One day, a neighbouring lady suggested a solution to his wife that they should sacrifice a child to Lord Bhairav so that the Lord gets pleased and blesses them with a child. When she told this to her husband, he absolutely denied it. Even after this, the woman decided to sacrifice a child to Bhairav. One day, on getting a chance, that woman pushed a girl into the well and sacrificed her in the name of Bhairav. By this act of hers, the sin of murder was inflicted on her and she was caught by leprosy all over her body.

When her husband came to know about this, he told his wife that cow slaughter, Brahmin slaughter, and child slaughter are sinful, and that was the reason that she got leprosy all over her body. At the behest of her husband, the woman went in the refuge of Mother Ganga and narrated her the entire episode and also requested Goddess Ganga to forgive her sins and take her out of the disease. Mother Ganga told her that she should worship the gooseberry (Amla) tree on the Navami (ninth day) of Kartik Shukla Paksha and also consume Amla.

The woman did everything according to the instructions of Mother Ganga, as a result of which she became free from leprosy. Along with this, after fasting for a few days, she was also blessed with a child. Since then, people have been observing this fast according to rituals. This is the reason why it is known as Amla Navami.
