Nakshatras – Defining Them!

So, what is a nakshatra? In literal words, Nakshatra can be divided into two words – Naksha and Tara. The Naksha means a map and Tara means a star. Which means Nakshatra signifies a map of a star. Nakshatras have an association with the movement of the Moon. There are 27 Nakshatras in Vedic astrology and the Moon travels through each nakshatra in 27 days. However, the Nakshatra where the Moon is present at the time of the birth is considered the Janma Nakshatra of the person.
Moreover, there is also a mythological significance attached to the Nakshatras and the movement of the Moon through each Nakshatra. It is believed that there was a king named Daksha, who had 27 daughters who together were called Nakshatras. The Moon was in love with one of the daughters, known as Rohini. King Daksha agreed to their love but with a condition that Moon should marry all the daughters.
The Moon accepted his condition and got married to the Nakshatras. But he spent most of the time with Rohini and the rest of the Nakshatras felt left out. So, they complained to Daksha, who took a promise from Moon to spend equal time with all his daughters. On the contrary, Moon failed to keep his promise and this annoyed Daksha so much that he cursed Moon that he will lose his lustre and would go waning.
All the deities asked Daksha to forgive Moon but as he could not take back the curse, he just changed it and since then Moon goes into waxing and waning. This cycle completes with Purnima and Amavasya, alternate in fifteen days each month. And the Moon stays in each Nakshatra for one complete day.
These 27 Nakshatras are divided into three groups with nine nakshatras in each group. These groups are named Dev Gana, Manushya Gana and Rakshas Gana. Ashwini Nakshatra – Appearance and Significance
The Ashwini Nakshatra’s appearance is represented by a constellation of three bright stars that seem to form the face of a horse. It symbolises golden armoured twins heads who are horse-headed. As they are symbolic of youth, they are called Ashwini Kumaras.
The Ashwini Kumaras are also believed to be the doctors or the physicians of the Gods. And, as they are known as doctors, it is no surprise that they are very close friends of the sick and less fortunate people. According to Vedic astrology, the Ashwini Kumaras are known to ride on a three-wheeled golden chariot driven by Horse’s bird and ride over the sky to bless people on earth.

When a child is born under the Ashwini Gandmool Nakshatra, it is not considered quite auspicious, though it’s not that bad.
